Novel Summary
In 1930s Mercia, Arthur Cuthbert, a lonely clerk, becomes obsessed with the notorious serial killer known as the Ragman. After a workplace injury leaves him with chronic pain and a denied disability claim, Arthur begins to imitate the Ragman's methods, blurring the line between his own identity and the killer's. As a series of new murders mirrors the Ragman's style, a sharp-witted investigator discovers that Arthur's memory is the most deceptive witness of all, revealing a truth constructed from fragments of delusion.
